Know Where You Stand
Nevada Rights & Laws
A plain-language look at the laws that affect people experiencing homelessness in Nevada.
Nevada's Fast "Summary Eviction"
Nevada has an unusual eviction process. In a summary eviction, the burden can fall on you, the tenant, to file a written Answer with the court to get a hearing — if you don't, you can be locked out quickly.
Deadlines are short (often just a few days). The moment you receive any eviction notice, contact Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada or Nevada Legal Services.
Never ignore a notice, and keep copies of everything.
Food Benefits Without an Address
You do not need a permanent address to get SNAP in Nevada. You can list a shelter, and being homeless does not disqualify you.
Homeless applicants often qualify for expedited benefits within 7 days. Apply through Access Nevada, or get free help from Three Square or the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.
Ask about the Restaurant Meals Program if you have no way to cook.
Surviving Desert Heat & Cold
Nevada's climate is extreme on both ends. In summer, heat can be deadly — cities open cooling stations during heat warnings. In winter, warming spaces open in the cold.
There is no statewide right to shelter, but help is activated during dangerous weather.
Dial 211 or check helphopehome.org for the nearest cooling or warming location right now.
Camping, Safety & Survivors
Las Vegas and other cities have camping/sleeping ordinances, and after Grants Pass v. Johnson (2024), bans may be enforced even when shelter is full.
- Check local rules before settling outdoors
- DV survivors have protected leave rights (NRS 608.0198)
- SafeNest (702-646-4981) offers 24/7 DV support
- Legal aid can help if property is taken in a sweep
